Catholic Apologetics Guidebook

~ A guide to the best Catholic apologetics resources on the internet ~

General Apologetics Information

Topics on This Page:

Apologetics Targeted to Non-Christians or Non-Theists
Apologetics Targeted to Protestants or Other Non-Catholic Christians
Conversion Stories

Most pages on this site contain links to articles, audio programs, and other resources that deal with specific topics in Catholic apologetics.  But this page presents resources which deal with apologetics at a broader level, with links to audio programs, books, and web sites that I recommend as good sources of general information on Catholic apologetics.

Apologetics Targeted to Non-Christians or Non-Theists

The resources below are aimed at presenting the arguments for Catholic belief to a non-Christian or even non-theistic audience, or at equipping Catholics to be familiar with these arguments.

Audio:

  • Sonitus Sanctus – This relatively new blog has numerous links to downloadable mp3 files on various web sites, covering practically any and every topic related to the Catholic faith

Apologetics Targeted to Protestants or Other Non-Catholic Christians

The resources in this section respond to common Protestant objections to the Catholic faith, and present the case for Catholic belief for a non-Catholic Christian audience.

Articles:

  • Fundamentalists by Peter Kreeft – An overview of the major points of disagreement between Catholics and Fundamentalist Protestants

Web Sites:

  • Catholic Answers – This is a great first stop for locating the answer to any question about the Catholic faith, especially questions related to apologetics.  Two of the most useful areas are the tract library and the back issues of This Rock magazine.  The search box in the upper-left corner is also helpful for quickly finding information on a particular topic.  You can also listen to archived "Catholic Answers Live" radio shows, as noted under "Audio" above.
  • Catholic Education Resource Center – This site is useful not only for Catholic educators, but for anyone looking for information on a wide variety of topics related to the Catholic faith, including various apologetic topics.  Just use the search feature to search through the site's large library of articles.
  • Catholics United for the Faith – The "Faith Facts" are probably the most useful feature on this site.
  • Defenders of the Catholic Faith (Steve Ray) – In addition to containing some helpful writings, this site is home to an excellent Catholic message board, which is frequented by many friendly and knowledgeable Catholics.
  • The Nazareth Resource Library (Jimmy Akin) – This web site has not had any significant updates since around 2000, however it still contains a wealth of great information on Catholic apologetics.
  • Mark Shea's Web Site – I'm not a huge fan of Mark Shea's very popular blog (mainly because of what I perceive as a somewhat abrasive or caustic style), but he does have some excellent writings on apologetics and other topics here on his web site, under the "Sheavings" menu heading.

Conversion Stories

Conversions stories can be a very effective form of apologetics.  Instead of simply reading abstract arguments for why the Catholic faith is right, with conversion stories we gain direct insight into how a particular individual came to accept the truth of the Catholic faith, including what issues or obstacles they faced along the way, and how they overcame those obstacles (with God's help of course).
